#SuperfoodSunday : Ginger

Ginger root has an incredible fragrant aroma and spicy flavour that is perfect for seasoning everything from soups, to grilled items, and even baking. While we love ginger for its depth in cooking, we are always looking for new applications because of its health benefits.

  • Ginger promotes digestion and aids nutrient absorption in the body – hence the importance of the pink pickled ginger that accompanies your sushi plates!
  • Ginger is a strong anti-inflammatory. For people suffering with joint pain, consume it in food and rub some ginger essential oil directly on problem areas.
  • Ginger will help clear your sinuses – your microcirculatory channels, to be exact.
  • Ginger helps prevent cramps and stomach pains.

Ginger is available in many forms, making it easy to incorporate into your lifestyle. Use ground ginger as a spice for sweet and savoury pastries, slices of whole ginger root steeped in tea for a warm winter treat, or juiced for a serious punch of flavour and superfood benefit.

Ginger Tea will boost your immune system and keep you extra warm during cold winter months.
Ginger Tea will boost your immune system and keep you extra warm during cold winter months.

During cold season, we live on ginger tea for the ultimate immune booster and to clear nasal congestion. Simmer a small pot of water with slices of fresh ginger root and a cinnamon stick for about 5 minutes. Use as much as you can handle – we make ours quite strong with a 1 cm piece of ginger, thinly sliced. Pour yourself a cup of your ginger tea, then add the juice of half a lemon and a teaspoon of raw honey. This tea will help boost your immune system to fight off colds, soothe sore throats, and will make you feel energized. Enjoy!
